Having A Blast! by Amber Mitchell

Having A Blast! by Amber Mitchell
Hey crafty friends! Amber Mitchell here on the Simple Stories blog today to share with you this fun and patriotic project I created using the new 'America the Beautiful' collection.

Red, white, and blue is one of my favorite color combinations, so I had a bunch of fun working with this collection. The 4th of July has always been a family tradition of an afternoon barbecue, games, sweet treats & fireworks. I love that this collection showcases all of those things and I can't wait to document the upcoming holiday in this cute mini album.

To create the pages of this project, I used the 3 x 4 inch journaling cards from the '12 x 12 Collection Kit'. I machine stitched along the edges of all of these before embellishing them. I used the stickers from the collection kit to add flair and sentiments to each page. For more texture and dimension, I added foam tape behind some of the stickers.

To store these pages, I created a memory-dex styled box by using straws as dowels. To create the box itself, I used a sheet of paper that measured 9.25 x 9.5 inches. I scored this paper on all four sides at 1.5 and 3 inches. I then folded and creased all of these score lines.

To assemble the box, first start by noting the four small squares in each corner of the template. Cut off the outer three squares, then cut on one side of the last square to create a tab. Do this for all four corners, then use the tabs to adhere the box together. Once the base is adhered, there will be four extra panels, one on each side of the box. Flip the two longer ones over and adhere them down.

To add the straw dowels to this box, first trim the straws to 3.5 inches in length. Next, use a quarter inch hole punch to punch holes on the two shorter panels. These holes should be two inches apart, and about half an inch from the edge of the panels. Once the holes are punched, add adhesive to the panel, in-between the holes, and secure the flap down. This will create a loose panel that the straws can easily pop in and out of.

The last step is to add coordinating punched holes to each page. You can use the holes on your box as a guide or simply measure it out. Once the holes have been added, slide the pages onto the straws and pop the straws into the holes in the box.

To embellish my box, I used some stickers from the collection kit along with some handmade paper rosettes. I also added some white, heart-shaped trim and a cute bauble & pompom charm I made to coordinate with this collection.

This mini album is so fun and as I said before, I can't wait to fill it with fun, happy memories! Thanks for stopping by my post today! I'll see you next time with another fun project!
