Hello, Simple Stories friends! It’s Jen today with a new 12x12 project using the Just Beachy Collection.
Recently, my sisters and I spent some time going through some of my dad’s old photos and came across this gem. I love the retro vibe and how cool he looks lounging on the beach in Hawaii. Later when I asked him about the picture, he explained that he was on R&R during his third tour of Vietnam and had recently survived an attack on the helicopter in which he flew. I wonder what he was thinking as he laid there soaking up the sun…was he contemplating all he had been through or simply clearing his mind and truly relaxing. Whatever the case, I love this photo and am so glad we found it.
Here's a look at the layout I created.
When starting my project, I was really drawn to the Beach Vibes patterned paper because of its subtle tones and clean pattern. Before I adhered the photo and embellishments, I cut the paper along the wave lines, distressed the edges, and glued them back in place on top of white cardstock. I love the dimension this created.
Because I had already distressed the edges of the waves, I kept the theme going by doing the same to the paper backing the photo and the white frame I machine-stitched on top of the background. I used foam tape to pop the photo off of the page and to create a pocket to hold the journaling tag.
Along the right side of the project, I used elements from the Big Bits & Pieces, Floral Bits & Pieces, and Bits & Pieces to create a fun beach scene.
Next, I adhered the waves from the Big Bits & Pieces in the lower-left corner with foam tape to raise them above the distressed waves and create another layer of texture.
I followed that with hand-written journaling on a cut-apart tag that I tucked behind the picture. Last, I completed the layout with a chipboard title, sticker sentiment, and glitter enamel dots along the bottom-right corner.
The new Just Beachy Collection is great for documenting your memories of trips to the beach and tropical getaways. Next, I plan to dig out pictures from my own trip to Hawaii when I was around the same age as my dad and on this very same beach!
