Autumn in Iceland layout
Hi everyone, it’s Celes (@guiademanualidades), and today I’m sharing my Autumn in Iceland Layout, a cozy fall project created with the beautiful Pumpkins & Plaid collection from Simple Stories. This layout documents one of those magical travel memories that I will never forget: walking through a forest in Iceland surrounded by trees full of golden yellow leaves, playing with them, laughing, and simply enjoying that perfect autumn moment. I love how this collection brings together warm colors, pumpkins, plaids, leaves and sweet little embellishments that make everything feel so inviting and full of charm. For this page, I wanted to create a soft and cozy composition, with layers around the photo, a handmade wood-style frame, and all those tiny details that help tell the story. Because some memories feel like a season, and this one will always feel like autumn to me.
Now let’s start with the creative process! For this layout, I wanted to create a soft, cozy, and very autumnal design, keeping the photo as the main focus and letting the beautiful details from the Pumpkins & Plaid collection bring the whole story to life. We’ll work with a simple structure, warm colors, and, of course, a few layers to add dimension and charm to the page.
Base of layout
The first thing we need to do is prepare the base of the layout. To do this, I used two patterned papers from the collection kit.
The first sheet is Item #27410 Blanket Weather, and we will keep it at 12” x 12”.
The second sheet is Item #27407 Autumn Days, and we will trim it down to 11 1/2” x 11 1/2”.
Adhere the second sheet on top of the first one, flat. Optionally, you can add a machine-stitched or hand-stitched border. I did mine with a sewing machine using white thread.
The photo I will use for this layout measures 4” wide x 5” tall.
The design is inspired by one of the die cuts from the collection: a photo frame.
The photo frame structure requires 8 strips of patterned paper with a woodgrain design or in a brown tone. The strips to cut are: a- 2 strips measuring 1/2” wide x 8” tall, b- 2 strips measuring 1/2” wide x 7” wide, and c- 4 strips measuring 1/2” wide x 2 1/2” tall. With these pieces, we will build the photo frame.
I also added 3 brown brads, each measuring 1/2” in diameter.
For the photo mat, I will use the same plaid paper from the base, but this time from the 6x8 paper pad. We need one piece measuring 4 1/2” wide x 5 1/2” tall.
I glued a piece of white cardstock, the same size as the photo, to the back of the photo to create a pocket, and I also added a journaling card measuring 3 1/4” wide x 4 1/4” tall.
Details
Adhere the photo, with its pocket already prepared, onto the patterned paper piece we cut earlier using 3D foam adhesive. Then adhere the resulting piece flat onto the layout base, centered and positioned 3 1/2” from the edge of the base.
Around the photo, build the frame using the paper strips. First, adhere the side strips, and then add the small corner pieces. The distance between the side strips and the photo is approximately 1/8”.
Adhere the side strips with 3D foam adhesive. Then add the brads to the short strips and adhere them, without 3D foam adhesive, to the corners of the frame we just built.
Once the entire central piece is ready, start decorating. Always keep in mind to use 3D foam adhesive to build different layers in the composition.
Optionally, you can add watercolor splatters to the layout.
For the journaling card, I created a pull tab using embellishments from the collection.
